On Saturday I had some really upsetting news 10 minutes before I started teaching a yoga class that involved 3 parties that I all knew and I found myself crying in the beginning of class as I began to speak about the importance of honesty, love and integrity.

Basically someone I know is having an affair with a married man with kids and I’m closest with the wife of the 3 parties and it really rocked me. Maybe because I’m now married myself and the thought of my partner having an affair would be devastating.

When we practice yoga we try to become better people, not just more flexible but more faithful, reliable and compassionate. I can empathize the reasons behind the affair and understand the role of a yogi is not to judge but only to love….. all 3 parties practice yoga regularly and I felt that maybe we need to emphasize the first limb of yoga.

The first limb, yama, deals with one’s ethical standards and sense of integrity, focusing on our behavior and how we conduct ourselves in life. Yamas are universal practices that relate best to what we know as the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The five yamas are:

  1. non violence
  2. truthfulness
  3. nonstealing
  4. continence
  5. noncovetousness

I love personal growth and development it’s what I thrive on. If I haven’t got a perspective course or workshop I’m planning on doing I feel lost. I feel my best when I’m growing, not only physically through my yoga practice and other types of exercise but also mentally through studying spiritual texts and personal development courses and books.

Through my new experience as step-mum of fulltime teenage boys I have found a lot of challenges and changes in my life. It has been the catalyst to some of the biggest personal growth experiences I have had to overcome  to date. This is partly why I have decided to dive deeper into my own emotional intelligence and learn more about creating lasting connections with others and study counselling techniques through Lifeline Australia.

If nothing less I will get to know a little more about myself and how to help others. I am hoping to gain the right tools and techniques to make a difference in helping others help themselves. Being a yoga teacher I believe these skills are priceless and I want to be the best I can be in shining light on those around me.

I live in a beautiful villa in Mermaid Beach however the only problem is it doesn’t have much of a garden area. There is no opportunity for a compost bin and being a vegan and living with 3 fruit bats we go through a lot of fruit and vegetable scraps. Up until now we have thrown them in the bin, but we now have a 1000 new residents.

The worm farm is an awesome idea given to me from my fellow yoga teacher Belinda. She inspired me so much that now I own my own 4 level worm farm and have the best food converter to plant fertilizer at my disposal.

It was so simple to set up and the boys loved picking the worms out of the bag and building their new home. It really is so easy to maintain and the boys love their new job and responsibility. I highly recommend the worm farm to anyone who has kids and wants to educate them on how they can make a difference in the world….. one worm at a time 🙂
